Infectious diseases are caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites. Many organisms live in and on our bodies and are normally harmless but there are some that can cause disease. They may be passed from person to person, from insects and animals or by consuming contaminated food or water. Some infectious diseases, such as measles and chickenpox, can be prevented by vaccines and safe hygiene practices such as washing the hands.
