Flexor carpi ulnaris muscle (FCU) is the most medial of the superficial flexor muscles and can adduct and flex the wrist at the same time. It flexes the wrist when it acts with the FCR and adducts it when acting with the extensor carpi ulnaris. This muscle is exceptional among muscles of the anterior compartment, being fully innervated by the ulnar nerve. The tendon of the FCU is a guide to the ulnar nerve and artery, which are on its lateral side at the wrist
Origin[edit | edit source]
It has an long linear origin from olecranon and posterior border of the ulna,
A humeral head origin from the medial epicondyle of the humerus.
Insertion[edit | edit source]
It insert at the base of Pisiform bone, hook of hamate and base of 5th metacarpal.
Nerve[edit | edit source]
FCU is innervated by the Ulnar nerve (C7,C8, T1)

Function[edit | edit source]
FCU flexes and adducts the hand at the wrist joint
Clinical relevance[edit | edit source]
The ulnar nerve enters the forearm by passing between the humeral and the ulnar heads of its proximal attachment.
Assessment[edit | edit source]
To test the flexor carpi ulnaris, the person puts the posterior aspect of the forearm and hand on a flat table and is then asked to flex the wrist against resistance while the examiner palpates the muscle and its tendon.
