Joy MacDermid is a physical therapist, hand therapist, and epidemiologist. She is an Associate Professor ( School of Rehabilitation Science ) at McMaster University and is also Co-director of the Clinical Research Lab within the Hand and Upper Limb Centre (HULC). She is cross-appointed to Departments of Surgery and Epidemiology at both McMaster University and the University of Western Ontario.
 
Her research projects emphasize multidisciplinary approaches to enhancing prevention, assessment, and management of musculoskeletal problems:
 
*Musculoskeletal disability (upper extremity/neck),
*Design and conduct of randomized clinical trials and cohort studies (Risk/Prevention/Effectiveness studies)
*Clinical measurement of pain and disability (performance and self-report)
*Work-related disorders and work disability
*Clinical epidemiology
*Clinical practice guidelines Knowledge exchange and transfer.
