Introduction[edit | edit source]

The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) is a self-report questionnaire that assesses sleep quality over a 1-month time interval. [1]

Purpose[edit | edit source]

The PSQI is designed to evaluate overall sleep quality in these clinical populations. Each questionnaire's 19 self reported items belong to one of seven categories:

  1. Subjective sleep quality
  2. Sleep latency
  3. Sleep duration
  4. Habitual sleep efficiency
  5. Sleep disturbances
  6. Use of sleeping medication
  7. Daytime dysfunction [2]

Population[edit | edit source]

The instrument was conducted with individuals aged 24–83 years. The questionnaire has been validated with a variety of clinical populations, including sleep disorders, cancer, and fibromyalgia. [2]

Administration[edit | edit source]

A self-report, pencil-and-paper measure, the instrument should require between 5 and 10 minutes for completion.

Reliability and Validity[edit | edit source]

It was found to have an internal reliability of a = .83, a test–retest reliability of 0.85 for the global scale, a sensitivity of 89.6%, and a specificity of 86.5%.[2]

Scoring[edit | edit source]

The questionnaire consists of a combination of Likert-type and open-ended questions (later converted to scaled scores using the provided guidelines). Respondents are asked to indicate how frequently they have experienced certain sleep difficulties over the past month and to rate their overall sleep quality.

Scores for each question range from 0 to 3, with higher scores indicating more acute sleep disturbances.
