Radiculopathy is the compression of a dorsal nerve root. A radiculopathy can be caused by a spinal disc herniation. In this case there is a tear in the annulus fibrosus witch caused the nucleus polposus to extrude through the tear and press against the spinal nerve. The discs protect the spine against compressive forces but are weak against rotational movements. This is the reason why people who pick up something and then rotate are more likely to cause a hernia.
