Vancouver Referencing

Introduction[edit | edit source]

Referencing is an essential part of academic writing and editing on Physiopedia. If you're editing for Physiopedia your reference list should be in Vancouver Style.

Please Note: There are different versions of Vancouver referencing and this Article is only a guide; if you have any doubts about your referencing you should always check with your lecturer, supervisor, course handbook and/or coursework guidelines.

While we do require that you follow the Vancouver style of referencing, you can choose different ways to create the actual text of the reference which you will then add when using the Cite function:

  1. Have the citation generated for you using a Google Scholar extension (aka Add-On) e.g. for Chrome or Firefox web browsers.
  2. Search for the article you're citing in pubmed.com, copy the information needed for the citation (at the top of the page) and paste into the Cite function box in Physiopedia. Rearrange the information to fit the Vancouver style of referencing (see examples below).
  3. Copy the Generic Sample (below) for the type of format you are sourcing and paste it into the Cite function box in your Physiopedia article. Use this as a handy guide as you replace the generic text with the correct information for your specific citation. If you use this option, please follow the upper/lower case as provided in the sample to ensure accuracy in the referencing style.

To find the correct short form for the journal you are citing, search for the article in pubmed.com and note the short form above the article title at the top of the page (see the example below).

How to Write a Reference[edit | edit source]

There are three basic bibliographic information that you need to be aware of to write a refernce of a material regardless of its type:

  • Author or editor
  • Date of publication
  • Title of the item

Using the Vancouver style you can reference any source of information such as: journal articles, books, websites, conference papers etc.

If you are referencing an article that is available on line, please make sure to add the link AFTER the reference, along with the date accessed (see examples listed below).

This table provides the method for different sources and an example for each:
